On January 2, 1966, MacLaughlin was flying as a wingman in an A4C Skyhawk on a combat mission in South Viet Nam. In zero visibility due to fog, Donald MacLaughlin did not return from that mission and perished. His memory is honored on the Viet Nam Memorial Panel 04E - - Line 51.
