Tommy Phelan '09 is Patriot League Goalie of the Week !! This press release was distributed by NAAA Sports Information, Stacie Michaud. Thank you Stacie Patriot League honors Phelan Men's Lacrosse Contact: Stacie Michaud (410) 293-8773 Phelan Earns League and National Recognition CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - After leading the Midshipmen to an 8-4 victory over Army last Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Navy senior goalkeeper Tommy Phelan (Towson, Md.) grabbed Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Goalkeeper of the Week honors for a second straight week and the third time in his career. Additionally, Phelan was selected to the Inside Lacrosse Team of the Week by Geoff Shannon for his clutch performance against the Black Knights. The IL staff also put him on their national ballot for the fan pick of the week. Last week he amassed more than 11,000 votes in the national vote to win over the fans, while this week he has earned over 4,000 of the 8,100 votes that had been cast and is well in front of the pack as the fans' player of the week. Making his third straight start in goal for Navy, Phelan picked up Smarltink Player of the Game kudos after he turned in a career-high tying 16-save performance and anchored a defensive effort that held the Black Knights to a season-low four goals. It marked the most saves by a Navy keeper in the Army-Navy series since 2000 when Mickey Jarboe turned back 19 potential goals in a 10-8 Navy win at West Point. Phelan was particularly stout in goal during the third period where he stopped eight of the nine shots on goal by the Army offense. Phelan has reached at least 15 saves in each of his three appearances this spring and owns a red-hot 74.6 save percentage. He has amassed 47 saves this season, while surrendering 5.33 goals per game. He has helped boost Navy up to the No. 2 scoring defense in the country, giving up 6.50 goals per contest, while the Mids' man-down defense is No. 1, stopping better than 85 percent of the extra-man chances by the opposition. The 11th-ranked Midshipmen will be back in action on Saturday when they make the short trip to Baltimore to face No. 9 Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field. Game time is slated for 2:00 pm and will be televised live on ESPNU and locally by WMAR TV (Ch. 2). Pete Medhurst will lend his voice to the Navy radio broadcast on 1430 WNAV beginning at 1:45 pm. ### Go Navy ### |
