It's Official - Navy plays Duke in the first round !! In a tough NCAA field this year, it was hard to tell who was #1. Syracuse, Duke and Princeton all had valid claims. Of course, the NCAA Selection Committee is based in Baltimore, and they make their minds up around April 15th, so any games played since then don't really seem to change things very much. =:-) So, Virginia was seeded #1, after being blown out by Duke twice in 10 days. So UVA faces Villanova, the AQ from the Colonial Athletic Association. Syracuse got the #2 seed and will play Siena the AQ from the MAAC. Duke at #3 plays Navy. Princeton at #4 plays UMass. Cornell at #5 plays Hofstra. North Carolina at #6 plays UMBC. Notre Dame at #7 plays Maryland. Hopkins at #8 plays Brown. In a fairly level NCAA field, both Navy and Hofstra have the opportunity to "play their way home" as unseeded teams - each hosting a set of Quarterfinal games - Hofstra on Saturday 5/16 and Navy on Sunday 5/17. It was apparent that playing in the Ivy or the ACC this season was a plus - as they ended up with 7 of the 16 teams coming from their conferences. Ironically, all three Ivy League teams are in the same bracket, and therefore, only one of them could make it to the NCAA finals. The ACC split, 3 and 1, with Duke, UNC and Maryland in one bracket and Virginia in the bracket with the Ivy League teams. Navy's first round game in Durham, NC will be played at 7:30 pm on Saturday 5/9/09. Watch for details on tailgater and hotel arrangements. We will post on the Parents Corner. Go Navy !!
