Happy New Year - 2010 !!! Thirty Days and counting down !! First scrimmage on January 30th against UMBC at Navy. We have been anticipating the 2010 season to begin ever since the exit from last season's NCAA playoffs. This team has great potential, and we have all been waiting anxiously for the 2010 season to begin. With so many returning starters and great speed all over the field, this team can be very special. Further, the great plebes who already have a half-a-year under their belt (or a year and a half for the NAPSters) are just busting to get on the field and start playing. I believe that we will see some immediate contribution from the Class of '13. The goalie competition is intense with three goalies in the thick of the race, and two others pushing them for field time. Coach Ray Finnegan '75 (the goalie guru) will be working as an "Alumni" this year helping Coach Stan Ross to continue Navy's history of superlative goaltending. This move clears the way for Coach Mark Goers to return as the Face-off coach (and everything else that Coach Meade needs). It is the hope of Navy fans everywhere that 2010 will be the year that Navy dominates the face-off X again. As everyone knows, the face-off involves at least three players working in harmony and Zach Schroeder '10, Jaren Woeppel '10 and a host of great short-stick midfielders love to win those face-offs. This should be an area of improvement for Navy this season. The defense should be very strong returning three players who started a number of games last year Tommy Mansfield '11, Mike Hirsch '11, and Matt Vernum '12. On offense, everyone knows that we have a dozen players returning who can score - and we will begin cheering them all in a few weeks. For now, let's get ready for some great scrimmages, and then rolling right into the regular season in February. Go Navy !! Buddy Garland '84 |
