RJ Wickham '12 Named Patriot League Goaltender of the Week !! Stacie Michaud, NAAA published this story from the Patriot League office. Thank you Stacie !! =========================================================== RJ Wickham '12 garners Patriot League honor Men's Lacrosse Contact: Stacie Michaud (410) 293-8773 Patriot League Honors Navy Lax's RJ Wickham '12 CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Sophomore goalkeeper RJ Wickham (Penn Yan, N.Y.) registered 31 saves in the first two games of the season, including a career-high 19-save performance against Loyola, en route to being named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week it was announced Tuesday by the conference office. It's the second time Wickham has picked up league recognition, though it is his first tip of the cap as the goalkeeper of the week. A year ago, he was honored as the rookie of the week following a superb effort against Lafayette. Wickham is just the fourth different Navy player to garner the league's keeper of the week recognition (established in 2007), joining Colin Finnegan '07, Tommy Phelan '09 and Matt Coughlin '09. After starting six games in the middle of the season a year ago, Wickham earned the starting nod in both Navy games this season. He opened the 2010 campaign by making 12 saves against VMI on Feb. 13, while just three of the five Keydet goals scored were at even strength. Wickham followed up by turning away 19 of Loyola's 27 shots on goal, including making 10 of his career-high 19 saves in the second quarter. The 19-save effort marked the best performance by a Navy keeper since former team captain Seth DiNola made 21 stops in a losing effort against Penn State (5-4) on April 12, 2003. The 16th-ranked Midshipmen (1-1) will be back in action on Thursday evening when they play host to No. 4 North Carolina (3-0). The 25th edition of the Navy-North Carolina series is set for a 7:00 pm faceoff at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and will be televised by CBS College Sports with Dave Ryan and Matt Danowski calling the action. Additionally, the game will be broadcast over the radio waves by WNAV 1430 AM with Pete Medhurst handling the call, beginning with the Navy lacrosse pregame show at 6:45 pm. The game will also be streamed online via Navy All-Access with live stats available at NavySports.com. Go Navy !! Buddy Garland '84 |
