Navy Tops the Lehigh to Open the Patriot League Season 8-3 !!

Fueled by a 3 goal 4th quarter, Navy broke open a tight game to knock off Lehigh 8-5, opening the Patriot League season on a positive note.

Led by Andy Warner '11 with 2 goals and 3 assists, the attack did most of the damage today.

Brendan Connors '10 (1G 1A), Ryan O'Leary '12, and Kyle Kapron '10 also scored goals for the Navy attack. The attack accounted for 5 of 8 goals and 4 of 5 assists on the night.

The rest of the Navy scoring came from the first midfield unit as Joe Lennon '10 broke out for 2 goals, while Nikk Davis '12 had a goal and Patrick Moran '10 had an assist.

Navy stepped up the offensive pressure as 22 of 32 shots were on goal tonight, forcing the Lehigh goalie to make 14 saves, while letting in 8 goals.

Navy did well on clears 17 of 20, and so-so on face-offs winning half of the 14 draws in the game. Robby Battle '10 won 5 of 10, while Logan West '12 won 2 of 4.

At the defensive end, the Navy defense (Michael Hirsch '11, Tommy Mansfield '11 and Ian Crumley '12) caused 4 turnovers from the Lehigh attackmen while the Mountain Hawks had 13 turnovers overall.

RJ Wickham '12 had another great game in goal, and fortunately was rewarded with a low-scoring game, as his 9 saves on 12 shots on goal, resulted in only 3 Lehigh scores - 1 in the second quarter and 2 in the 3rd.

Jaren Woeppel '10 had 4 ground balls from the wing while playing active defense in the middle of the field.

Marty Gallagher '11, Joe McAuliffe '10, Jordan Seivold '13, Bucky Smith '13 and Anthony Arena '10 all played well at the defensive midfield position.

Kevin Doyle '11, Basil Daratsos '10, Taylor Cook '12 and Brian Striffler '11 played offensive midfield, although nobody hit the scoring column.

The penalty situations were very interesting tonight. Navy went 0-7 on EMO, despite Evan Sullivan '10 (who participates in a lot of EMO scoring plays) putting 2 of his 3 shots on goal. At the defensive end, Navy returned the favor, shutting out Lehigh's EMO - going 0-5. I suppose it was a defensive night. Jake Brosnan '10 played well on defense tonight.

Next up - Bucknell at Navy Marine Corps Stadium this Saturday - noon face-off.

Go Navy !!
