Virginia Tops Syracuse to Rise to Top of Coaches Poll - Navy Appears at #18 !!

With Virginia knocking off last season's champion, Syracuse, we have a new #1 at the top of the poll for the first time this year, while Syracuse only fell to #2.

After knocking off two Patriot League foes last week in Lehigh and Bucknell, Navy climbed back into the mix at #18.

Both of Navy's losses have come at the hands of ranked opponents, with North Carolina polling at #4, while Loyola is ranked 9th.

Notre Dame barely got by Loyola this past weekend, and although currently ranked #3, they are probably due for a big slide. It may come now, or it may come late in the season, but if I were the Notre Dame parents, I wouldn't spend a lot of time reserving tickets for Memorial Day in Baltimore.

North Carolina is a solid #4, at least until they play somebody better than them.

Maryland at #5 pulled out an OT victory over #10 Duke in the first game of the Minolta Classic in Baltimore, in a style similar to Navy's victory over Bucknell. Maryland was up by 3 with just over 4 minutes to go, when Duke put on a rally to tie it up, sending the game to overtime.

Grant Catalino netted five goals on the day, including the game winner, that was set up by a Brian Phipps (grandson of long-time Navy Assistant, Buster Phipps) save and outlet pass.

During that game, Dennis Yeatman's '83 son, Will, had two goals.

Princeton at #6, who knocked off Hopkins in the second game of the Minolta Classic with their own OT victory is definitely a team to watch. They have a freshman from Port Washington, who is Vinny Sombrotto's nephew. He has 7 goals on 9 shots in his first two collegiate games, including 4 against Hopkins - not bad. Oh yeah, did I mention that he won 10 of 17 face-offs. Jeff Froccaro - I think we'll be hearing more about this guy.

By the way, a young man named Michael Chanenchuk had 2 assists for Princeton. Coach Bates has these boys shooting, and they are 2-0.

Hopkins hangs at #7 with the close loss to Maryland, while Cornell is at #8, even after struggling to get by Army in OT at Cornell. Army isn't too bad, and Cornell might not be that good - we'll see.

Loyola at #9 is surprising some people and Hofstra at #10 might make a run, although some insider information tells me that they are not as good as last year's team.

Duke dropped down to a tie with Hofstra at #10.

Georgetown beat St John's by 3, while Harvard nipped Holy Cross by 2 - both hardly resume games. Their battles are still yet to come.

Delaware #13, Stony Brook #14, Lafayette #15 and Yale #16 are all making early season appearances in the polls - a novelty.

Delaware beat a good Albany team over the weekend, while Stony Brook has beaten Towson. Yale nipped #19 UMass last Friday.

Lafayette owns a victory over an unranked Penn team, to serve as the highest ranked Patriot League team, but Saturday's clash with Navy will be more illuminating.

Navy at #18 and Bucknell at #20 finish out the poll for this week.

There are a number of defining games on the schedule for the next two weeks - and we will see some shifting.

Who knows, if Jacksonville wins a few more, they might make an appearance later in the season. They are 3-3 with two of their losses by a single goal. They also have the nation's point scoring leader, Ryan Serville (although, he is a Canuck). Nice debut for Coach Kerwick, who just earned his 100th D-I coaching victory.
