One of the efforts conducted in the Recognition mission area, was the construction
and outfitting of the Bilderback-Moore Navy Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The cutting of the ceremonial ribbon was performed by All Americans Charley Guy '46 and Stew McLean '48 on Friday April 13, 2007 on the eve of the 2007 Army-Navy game. If you have been
to Navy-Marine Corps Stadium this year, you have seen that there is a large grey-granite
structure on the home-team side of the stadium (where the ticket booth used to reside).
The second floor of that building is the Bilderback-Moore Navy Lacrosse Hall of
Fame, named in honor of two of the great Navy Lacrosse coaches from 1936-1972. Between
them, they amassed 15 National Championships (6 for Moore, 9 for Bilderback) and
had winning percentages that were out of this world (77% for Moore, 86% for Bilderback)
!! This HOF is important not simply to recognize the past, but it stands as a testament to the future. Coach Meade uses this venue during football season as the "front porch" for his recruiting efforts for Navy Lacrosse. The northeast end of the HOF has jerseys and awards and memorabilia from the current team and a "sitting room" atmosphere, where Coach Meade can sit down with a player and his parents and discuss the merits of attending the Naval Academy to play lacrosse. Coach believes that he can help a young man understand that his future accomplishments could be the next ones cited on "that wall," if the player dedicates himself to the sacrifice that is required to become a Navy Lacrosse player. NAVYLAX wants to continue to help Coach Meade realize that vision. The Navy Lacrosse Hall of Fame committee has worked with the USNA Foundation and the Naval Academy Athletic Association throughout the construction project to build a facility that suitably honors the 100 year tradition of Navy Lacrosse, yet provides a "forward looking" vision to help attract tomorrow's recruits to Navy. The HOF Committee consists of Tommy Hagan '69, Marty Mason '75, Jim Lewis '66, Carl Tamulevich '68, Greg Murphy '70, Jake Lawlor '75, Buddy Garland '84, Brian Lantier '65, Mike Gottleib '70, Mike Buzzell '80 and Glen Miles '86. Coach Richie Meade is very supportive of the HOF and states that it will be central to his recruiting during Navy home football games. He also plans to use the room to serve team dinners prior to Navy Lacrosse home and local games - to instill tradition. The following Statement of Objectives was documented by Greg Murphy '70, as the consensus of the committee. March 22, 2005 We welcome your comments on this concept and the HOF, in general.
